Automatic detection and classification of disfluent reading miscues in young children's speech for the purpose of assessment

This paper explores the importance of disfluent reading miscues (sounding-out, hesitations, whispering, elongated onsets, question intonations) in automating the assessment of children’s oral word reading tasks. Analysis showed that a significant portion (21%) of the speech obtained from grades K-2 children from predominantly Spanish-speaking families contained at least one disfluent reading mi...

An explanation for failure of impedance apnoea alarm systems.

24-hour recordings of the ECG and respiration, the latter from an impedance technique, have shown a phenomenon which could account for hitherto unexplained failures of impedance apnoea alarm systems. Whenever apnoea is accompanied by bradycardia there is a pronounced increase in the amplitude of the cardiac impulse on the respiration carrier. This imitates the respiration signal and prevents th...

A better Approach to detect the Presence of Cell Phones being used in Prohibited Areas

This handy, pocket-size mobile transmission detector can sense the presence of an activated mobile phone from a distance of one and half meters. So it can be used to prevent the use of mobile phones in examination halls, confidential rooms, etc. There are existing models for the cell phone detectors which works when some transmission occurs from the phone. In this paper, we are proposing a dete...

Early Forest Fire Detection Using Radio-Acoustic Sounding System

Automated early fire detection systems have recently received a significant amount of attention due to their importance in protecting the global environment. Some emergent technologies such as ground-based, satellite-based remote sensing and distributed sensor networks systems have been used to detect forest fires in the early stages. In this study, a radio-acoustic sounding system with fine sp...
